Whether you're planning a local move or an interstate move, there are a lot of things to consider and plan ahead for, including reserving moving services in advance, submitting a change of address form, transferring records, contacting utility companies, and more.

To help you adequately prepare for your move, Statewide Moving has rounded up a list of important things to do as your moving date approaches. Check out our eight-week schedule guide and checklist below to ensure you don't forget anything leading up to your big move!

Eight Weeks Before the Move

  • Create a file or folder designated to hold everything related to your move, including papers, receipts, estimates, records, contracts, and more.
  • Notify your insurance company of your move, even if you are planning a local move.
  • Transfer school records to the new location if you have children and are changing school districts.

Six Weeks Before the Move

  • Contact current and future landlords and real estate agents as necessary to set your moving schedule.
  • Get records and referrals for medical, dental, legal, and other personal providers if you are moving out of the area.
  • Reach out to your pet's veterinarian to schedule a check-up and retrieve your pet's records to bring to the new location with you.
  • Reserve your moving services with Statewide Moving

Four Weeks Before the Move

  • Cancel current newspaper and trash services, if applicable.
  • Contact utility companies, including electric, gas, cable, internet, phone, and other essential services, to schedule disconnect and connection dates.
  • Ensure you drain all oil and gasoline from your landscaping equipment, including lawnmowers and snow blowers, since moving companies cannot move these items if they're full of hazardous materials.
  • Notify your landlord of your moving date and reserve the elevator for your use if you live in a high-rise building.
  • Plan your packing supply needs with your moving company or reserve time for them to pack your things professionally for you.

Two Weeks Before the Move

  • Begin packing items you will not need to use until after the move.
  • Make a list of things you need to buy to help facilitate your move.
  • Sort your items into piles of things you want to move with you, things that are trash, and things you can donate.
  • Start planning how you want to arrange your furniture at your new location.

Days Before the Move

  • Separate your luggage and any special items you want to keep with you during the move from the rest of your packed items.
  • Submit your change of address to the post office or click here to change your address online.

Moving Day

  • Relax and enjoy the day as much as possible since you put so much time and effort into planning the move by trusting Statewide Moving to take care of everything that's left to do!
